My name is Makenna Schwab and I’m 14 years old. Over the course of my life, I have been treated at Seattle Children’s Hospital where an amazing team of doctors have performed over 15 life-changing and life-saving surgeries for me.

I was born with a rare connective tissue disorder called Larsen syndrome, which causes dislocations in my joints, instability in my spine and trouble with my breathing. I’ve had to face a lot of challenges, but rather than let my disability hinder me from what I love to do, I decided to embrace it and try to use my experience to create something positive.

When I was 8 years old, I asked my mom if I could sell cookies and lemonade and donate all of the proceeds to Seattle Children’s as a way to give back. Since then, I’ve worked on a variety of projects — from bake sales and toy drives to making packs of food for inpatient families. The money I’ve raised has helped to provide uncompensated care to families at Seattle Children’s. It has also allowed me to provide red wagons for patients in the hospital and purchase new medical equipment to help treat kids like me.

While I was getting treatment for my spine, I was given a wish through Make-A-Wish. I knew I wanted to use it to help others, but was unsure of my plan at first. That’s until I learned about Chris Pratt and the wonderful work he was doing, like visiting kids at the hospital. I saw that he had heart for Seattle Children’s, just like me!

Chris inspired my wish, which was to have him help me with my fundraising projects for the hospital. The best part was that he agreed! He visited me at Seattle Children’s where he met my team of doctors and hung out with me for the day. We brainstormed ideas for the project and quickly became friends. We have stayed in contact over the last year and a half, and Chris has continued to encourage and inspire me to keep making a difference for other kids.

Chris has kept his promise and I’m so excited to announce that together we’re launching a special fundraising project to benefit the Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Program at Seattle Children’s!

Chris has always told to me dream big. I hope my story and fundraising work will help to inspire kids everywhere to dream big and use your voice to make a positive change in the world.

With your generous donation to the project, you can help the Orthopedics and Sports Medicine team deliver innovative treatments and world class care to help every child live their healthiest and most fulfilling life possible. Donors will also have an opportunity to win a trip for four to spend time with Chris Pratt on the set of Jurassic World Sequel in Hawaii!
